Wippolderlaan

Future proof widening of N211 with an eye for flow and soil risks.

The N211 Wipploderlaan – the busiest provincial road in the Netherlands – will be widened over 1.7km and provided with grade-separated intersections. All work is carried out while maintaining traffic flow. Due to complex soil conditions, risk pre-loading under high-voltage power lines and a bonus construction for timely delivery, the challenge lies in a smart and location-oriented approach that guarantees quality and speed.

Our approach

BTE has been involved in the project from the tender phase in which the tender team advised on variation and solutions. Thanks to their specialized geotechnical knowledge, fast and effective practical solution were thought of for the pre-loading, with detailed lead times. This resulted in precise phasing, with customized pre-load measures per location. Where necessary, pre-loading was accelerated, applied without additional costs or innovative alternatives were devised.  The result was an implementable design with a well-planned phasing. At every location, the pre-load height was accurately determined, continuously monitored and adjusted if necessary. Settlement accelerating measures, such as vertical drainage, were applied, and a lightweight foundation was chosen under the roundabout.

Methodology

The optimizations that have been applied have saved a lot of vertical drainage. This in turn has saved transport movements, material and emissions during application. The saving of pipes for vertical drainage alone has saved 1000 transport movements, with associated emissions.

Results & Advantages

BT Engineering delivered a winning design strategy for the N211, securing the tender worth over € 100 million. Smart optimizations – such as saving 1.2 million meters of drainage and 1900 m3 of lightweight material – saved over €1.4 million in costs. The project also remained on schedule, despite complex boundary conditions.

Impact

Our solution reduced the required vertical drainage by more than 50%. Traffic flow remained at the same level during implementation. In this way we combine smart engineering with concrete social added value.

Why BT Engineering?

We combine in-depth knowledge of infrastructure, geotechnics and implementation with a keen eye for feasibility. By listening carefully and switching flexibility, we deliver safe, feasible designs that fit within planning and budget

We have been working together with BT Engineering for many years. They always provide sound advice quickly for both simple projects as well as complex requestions.
