Quay Construction Derde Haven Scheveningen
Project Description
In the context of the redevelopment into a residential area around the Derde Haven in Scheveningen, replacing the existing quay structure was necessary. Commissioned by the Gemeente Den Haag, BT Engineering drew up the Preliminary design and Definitive design for the new quay structure. During the implementation we also supported the municipality with supervision and technical guidance.
The location is complex, with many interfaces in the subsoil and existing infrastructure. A smart design approach and careful execution were also essential for the success of this project.

Our approach
BTE took on the project in its entirety, from the initial design to implementation:
- Preliminary Design and Definitive Design of new combination wall construction, taking into account environmental influences and existing quay structures
- Phaseable and implementable design, where parts of the old quay were temporarily supported by new structures during demolition work.
- Risk analysis and testing of environmental influences, including the effects on adjacent building and infrastructure
- Detailed interactive analysis between the quay and a direct rear pump room for heat and cold storage, including assessment of differential deformation at the pipe connections.
- Management and support during implementation, under which control of the applying and pre-tensioning the anchorage, and thinking about implementation problems.
- which limits the risks of settlement and damage to the environment
- Smart phaseable implementation
- by integral consideration of interfaces in design and implementation
- Preventing failure costs
- through full support during all project phases
- Unburdening the client
Why BTE
BTE combines knowledge of civil engineering design with a pragmatic view on implementation. In this project the interfaces between old and new, between design and reality, were constantly present. Thanks to our broad expertise at the intersection of geotechnics and structural hydraulic engineering, and our experience with complex urban projects, we could take completely unburden Gemeente Den Haag – from the first sketch to the last bolt.
