Pumping station 1st Embankment/Petronella

The monumental pumping station Petronella in the Amsterdam region ensures dry feet by pumping excess polder water into the Amstel.  Due to climate change, it is necessary to increase the capacity of the station by 50% and be thoroughly renovated to last another 50 years. Because of the protection status and location in the water barrier, a safe and executable construction phasing is essential. Therefore, Waternet calls in technical experts to prevent damage and maintain control over the implementation.

Our approach

For Waternet, BT Engineering researched the existing pumping station and determine which parts were suitable to continue to do their jobs in the future and which parts had to be replaced.

BT Engineering made a pre-design of parts to be replaced that are visually integrated into the visible parts of the existing pumping station. BT Engineering also advised a monitoring and implementation phasing to limit the environmental nuisance.

Success factor

BT Engineering worked out the design on the basis of the objectives of Waternet and the water safety standards to guarantee sufficient safety during implementation and the lifespan.

The pumping station building and the masonry parts of the intersection with the dike have been reused. By putting the large majority of new parts underground, the look of the monument remains unchanged.

Results & Advantage

Thanks to this reconstruction, the polder ‘Eerste Bedijking der Mijdrechtse Droogmakerij’ will remain dry in the coming 50 years. The pumping station is technically renewed and a monument protected. Thanks to smart design, construction phasing and monitoring, the impact on the environment, residents and dike remained minimal.

Impact

The lifespan of the pumping station is extended by 50 years and the pumping capacity has been increased by 50%. Environmental damage was prevented and valuable parts from 1794, 1885 and 1930 have been preserved.

Why BT Engineering?

We combine in-depth knowledge of flood protection, geo-technique and implementation risks with a practical approach. By listening well, doing research and designing accurately, we deliver smart solutions with minimal nuisance and maximum preservation of quality.
