In order to improve the accessibility north of Amsterdam, Thorbeckeweg (N516) is being tackled thoroughly. The project includes a grade separated intersection by Wibautstraat, a new intersection with the Noorder IJ-Zeedijk, a bike tunnel near Skoon and a new bike bridge near the A8, among other thigs. This work is taking place in complex surroundings: weak sub-soil, limited space, and many existing cables and pipelines ask for a well thought geo-technical approach.
Boskalis asked BT Engineering (BTE) to help think about auxiliary structures and temporary facilities, and to review documents and advise on optimizations.
Our role in this project was the implementation of geo-technical calculations for temporary relief works. This included, among other things:
· Advice for temporary foundations of the bike bridge by the A8
· Design of safe installation sites for cranes and foundation racks, also in location with soft ground and in direct proximity to traffic flows
· Setting and stability analysis for the temporary road diversion of the N516
· Analysis of the working path at Skoon, with a view to stability, safety and feasibility
BTE combines geotechnical expertise with a strong feeling for practical feasibility. In this project we made the difference by acting quickly, adapting our calculations to the dynamics of a busy traffic area, and proactively thinking about solutions for foundation and settlement problems. Our involvement ensured reliability on paper and on the construction site.
